Si no hubiese sido por Cahiers Du Cinema, la Nueva Ola francesa no hubiese existido. La hoy legendaria revista sirvió de aglutinante de la Nouvelle Vague, de medio de expresión y de guía fiable. Desde su primer número en 1951 y hasta 1965 (fecha oficial de la desaparición de la Nouvelle Vague), la aparición mensual de Cahiers Du Cinema era seguida con fervor por miles de cinéfilos franceses. Se dice que durante años, la revista perdió dinero o se mantuvo justamente a flote gracias a ciertos anunciantes fieles. Curiosamente, cuando la publicación salió de los números rojos e incluso lanzó una edición en inglés (diciembre de 1965), el equipo editorial original ya se había marchado y la Nueva Ola en sí no existía ya.
