The Social and Civic Media Section of the Division of Communications at UNICEF is looking for an Intern who will work on the Digital Citizenship and Safety for Developing Countries project (described below). The intern will be working closely with the project manager at UNICEF NYHQ’s office for 3 months minimum starting on March 30 or earlier if available. The Intern can work on site in New York (if available locally) or remotely if outside New York. The intern is expected to spent 15 hours a week in researching, translating, and analyzing with weekly working sessions with the project team via skype/phone if remote. Please note that the position is unpaid and candidate could be asked to work longer hours during deliverable deadlines.
General Job Description – The Intern position has one main component:
The Digital Safety for Developing Countries is a research project in partnership with the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. The project looks at the digital safety risks faced by adolescents and young people from developing nations, ranging from sexual predation, trafficking, child pornography and hateful speech to the violations of basic human rights, such as the right to freedom of speech and association. The project is currently entering a vast research phase where the collection, interpretation and analysis of existing data is key.
The intern will be in charge of looking at all the available research, reports, articles on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) by adolescents and young people in Argentina, both in English and Spanish. The candidate should have knowledge of Argentina, its history, society and cultural context.
Qualifications or specialized knowledge/experience required: • Knowledge of Argentina and fluency in Spanish is indispensable (preferably the candidate should have studied or worked in the country) • Knowledge of social media, mobile Internet and other ICTs a plus • Experience in research and writing papers is fundamental • Familiarity of human rights law • High interest in issues covering Argentina and social media
